The SS20/40 circuit is the flagship of our Custom Shop Studio range - full of convenient and powerful features like power switching, footswitchable reverb and boost, and a wide range of gain options. Designed for the professional session player who needs a versatile amplifier without option paralysis. For 2025 our new revisions include higher headroom in Stage mode, a Bright switch, a footswitchable Boost option, and extra control over the built-in spring reverb (on both combo and head formats). The SS20/40 circuit starts with the option of High and Low impedance inputs to tailor the gain range to your instrument - the Low impedance input is an often underused feature perfect for players who prefer less preamp compression or have high output pickups. The Bright switch works on both inputs and adds a pleasing sparkling treble to clean tones, or tightens up a higher-gain driven tone. The Boost control adds preamp gain for extra harmonic thickness and is interactive with the Bright switch and input impedance - after much road-testing by our artists and engineers we have also made this boost footswitch capable so you can punch it in and out as you need it. From there the signal passes through a traditional 3-band EQ and to a quad of EL84s delivering 40 watts in Stage mode; thanks to the clever power-scaling option which gives the circuit its name this can also be reduced to just over 20 watts in Studio mode for overdrive at lower volumes. As one of the few Custom amps we offer with reverb, we have spent a lot of time making sure the onboard spring tank is both as lush-sounding and versatile as the rest of the amplifier circuit. We have added a new Dwell control to adjust how much signal is hitting the reverb tank, as well as the previous Reverb control for how much is mixed back into the signal. The interaction between these two controls is practically endless and offers everything from traditional amplifier 'short' reverb sounds to huge, lush ambient tones.
